Location of loss : uA188 baggage unload to carousel
On Saturday, I was traveling from Canada to South Africa. My route included a flight from Sudbury to Toronto, followed by a two-hour layover, and then a flight from Toronto to New York. After a two-and-a-half-hour layover in New York, just as we were about to board the next aircraft, I was informed that my bag was considered oversized. This was surprising, as I had no issues on two previous smaller flights, and I’ve used this same laptop bag for years without incidents during international travel.
Ultimately, I was asked to leave the bag in front of the aircraft, with the assurance that I would retrieve it upon arrival in South Africa. Upon landing at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg last night (around 19:30), I discovered the bag was not waiting outside the aircraft as promised. Instead, I was told it would appear on the carousel. This created a problem because my passport was inside the laptop bag, and I needed it to go through passport control before accessing baggage claim.
At the passport control help desk at O.R. Tambo, I explained my situation, and a staff member quickly retrieved the bag in about five minutes, allowing me to proceed through passport control.
Today, Monday, as I was preparing for a meeting and opened the bag around 13:00, I realized that my laptop was missing. Everything else was intact, but the laptop must have been stolen sometime during the journey—either at New York or in South Africa.
I reported this incident to SAPS case number:
