About Raleigh-Durham International Airport

Raleigh-Durham International Airport (IATA : RDU) serves North Carolina’s Research Triangle, about 16 kilometres northwest of downtown Raleigh. It works from Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, joined by a free shuttle bus. The largest carrier is American Airlines, alongside Delta, Southwest and other domestic operators spread across the two terminals.

The airport is connected to Raleigh and Durham by GoTriangle and GoRaleigh bus routes rather than rail.

Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, and Who Handles It

Two things set the process at RDU. First, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 operate independently, so confirming which one you flew from is the first step in any report; your boarding pass will show it. Second, lost property here is handled by the Airport Police Department rather than a general customer-service desk, which is simply who to ask for, not a sign that anything is wrong. Put those together and the path is clear : work out your terminal, then contact the Airport Police.

Reporting a Lost Item at Raleigh-Durham Airport

Report to the Airport Police Department, in person while you are at the airport or by phone and through our platform afterwards. Give the terminal, the area and a clear description of the item.

Something left on board is recovered by the airline, not the airport. Give your carrier the flight number and seat so the crew can check the cabin.

You can also complete and send in the Lost Item Report Form on our platform so that our team can assist you in reporting your lost item(s).

Common Places Items Turn Up at RDU

  • Security screening and the tray return in whichever terminal you used
  • Gate seating and the airside shops and cafes
  • Baggage claim carousels on the arrivals level
  • The free shuttle stops between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2
  • The rental car area, where arriving passengers often head first

Collecting Your Item

When the department has your item, bring identification that matches the report to collect it, or send someone with written authorisation and both sets of documents. If returning is not practical, ask the department whether the item can be couriered to you.
