Airport lost items reporting

About Baltimore International Airport

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is one of three major airports serving the Washington D.C. and Baltimore metropolitan area, located approximately 16 kilometers south of Baltimore and 48 kilometers northeast of Washington D.C. The airport is a major base for Southwest Airlines, which operates more flights through BWI than any other carrier, alongside Spirit, American, Delta, United, and several international airlines. BWI serves over 26 million passengers annually.

The airport is named after Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Justice of the United States Supreme Court, who was born in Baltimore. BWI is known for its relatively affordable fares and attracts a wide range of leisure and business travellers connecting the Mid-Atlantic region to domestic and international destinations. The airport features a single main terminal with multiple concourses and is directly connected to the MARC Train and Amtrak services at BWI Rail Station, making it well served by public transport from both Baltimore and Washington D.C.

What Should You Do If You’ve Lost Something at BWI ?

If you are still in the terminal when you notice the loss, speak to the nearest airport staff or security officer immediately. Staff can check gates, waiting areas, and coordinate with TSA for items left at security checkpoints.

BWI’s lost property service operates daily with extended hours, running from early morning until late evening seven days a week. This makes it one of the more accessible airport lost property services in the region.

How to Report a Lost Item at BWI

Contact the BWI Airport lost property office during opening hours. Provide the date and time of your visit, the concourse and gate where you believe the item was lost, your flight details, and a detailed description of the item. You can also complete and send in the lost item report form through our platform, so our team can help you transfer your report to the appropriate lost property office(s).

Items Lost on an Aircraft

For items left onboard a Southwest, American Airlines, Delta, United Airlines, Spirit, or any other flight, contact the airline’s baggage services or customer service team directly. Airlines handle found property from their aircraft separately from BWI airport’s lost property service.

Common areas at BWI where passengers lose items include the security screening checkpoints, concourse seating areas, the food court, restrooms, the connecting walkways between concourses, and the baggage claim and ground level pickup zones.

Tips to Efficiently Report a Lost Item

  • Note the specific concourse and gate number where you last had the item
  • Include your airline and flight number
  • Give the approximate date and time
